A second deck on the Sun Bowl Stadium press box was added in 1969 and in 1982 extra seating was added to bring the present seating capacity to 52,000. The 1969 expansion included "The Captain's Club," a facility for special supporters to the university. In 1998 "The Captain's Club" had another facelift, this time with all the seatback chairs being reupholstered.

The stadium has featured three scoreboards during its 39-year history. The first scoreboard was installed during the stadium's inception in 1963 and was used until 1982. In 1983, the scoreboard was replaced with a more modern scoreboard with a digital display board. Beginning this season, UTEP has replaced the digital board with a state-of-the-art 20-foot by 26-foot video board to go along with three strategically-placed scoreboards.

The Sun Bowl will have a new look in 2001, with the installation of the grass-like artificial surface AstroPlay. The first artificial turf was installed in the Sun Bowl in 1974. Before 1974 Bermuda grass had covered the field, but fell victim to the weather and gave way to synthetic turf.

Since 1968 the Sun Bowl game has had a working agreement with CBS television, and the CBS radio network has been broadcasting the Sun Bowl contest worldwide on the Armed Forces Network as well. The 1998 Norwest Sun Bowl saw one of the biggest upsets of the season, as the underdog TCU Horned Frogs thoroughly dominated the Pac 10's representative, Southern California, en route to a 28-19 victory. Last season's Wells Fargo Sun Bowl saw Wisconsin edge UCLA, 21-20.

Five games involving the Miners stand out in Sun Bowl Stadium history. UTEP defeated then-defending national champion Brigham Young on Oct. 26, 1985, 23-16. A 31-24 triumph over Air Force on Nov. 19, 1988 vaulted the Miners into the Independence Bowl. In 1999, UTEP routed previously unbeaten arch-rival New Mexico State, 54-23, before the first sellout crowd (52,247) since the 1982 expansion. The 2000 season saw a pair of memorable games. In a battle of WAC unbeatens, UTEP took a 23-0 lead over Fresno State, en route to a 23-13 win on Oct. 21, 2000. UTEP clinched a share of its first-ever WAC title with a resounding 38-21 win over Rice before a Sun Bowl crowd of 53,304, the largest crowd to ever witness a football game in the stadium.

The Miners followed up a 4-1 home performance in 1999 with an amazing 5-0 record at home in 2000. It was UTEP's best home mark since a 6-0 run in the Sun Bowl in 1988. UTEP set a school record for attendance in 2000, averaging 44,715 fans per game. The mark broke the previous record set in 1987, when UTEP averaged 42,085 fans per contest. The Miners averaged 35.6 points and 420.6 yards of total offense at home in 2000, while winning by an average margin of 17.1 points per game.

UTEP has played 214 games in the Sun Bowl, and holds an 87-124-3 record in those contests.
